Minutes Parish Council meeting March 2, 2010
Present: Father Millott, Father Riley, Deacon Joe Baniukiewicz, Deacon Mike
Chase, Anita Fenton, Janet Rauktis, Dave Standring, Karen Belliveau, Margaret
Abboud, Vincent Matulaitis, Mary Carrington, Joan Cross, and Kathy Johnson
Father Millott led the opening prayer with the parish council members joining
him in the prayer and the Mission Statement. A change was made in the notes
from the January notes and then they were accepted.
Old Business
· Parish Ministries Brochure-Father Millott is still working on the parish
brochure
· Parish Magnets- Janet showed an example of the magnet. The phone
number will be changed to the rectory number. Father Millott suggested that
the phone number be the same font as the address. Deacon Joe felt it should
be larger for those with vision issues. It was then suggested that all writing be
in a bigger font. We can order 1500 at .24cents each. There are currently 1400
active parish members, so Janet will check on a price for 2000.
Temporal Administrator
· Since we no longer receive envelopes for the boiler fund in our monthly
envelope packets, parishioners have stopped giving, but we are still quite a
way from our goal. We need a capital improvement fund beyond the cost of the
boilers to keep up with the needs of the plant.
· There will be a diocesan fundraiser for all parishioners in all parishes, to
give more in their envelopes. It may be possible to fund the capital
improvement fund with the extra donations. There was a motion to send it to
the Finance Committee and it was approved.
· A new bid for the folding wall replacement was received for $192,000.
Two earlier bids were for $155,000. One broken panel is being worked on next
week.
New Business
· Partners in Charity will begin on April 10-11.
· Haitian Mission Project with the Sisters of Saint Ann was discussed. The
Sisters have been working in Haiti for 42 years, and they lost everything. They
have no money for repairs. They are currently teaching outside and living in
tents. They are growing tired, removing rubble as they try to continue their
ministry. Sisters from Canada are joining them. They need help to rebuild the
school and help stabilize the lives of about 400 students. Right now, families
are living in the one remaining school. It would cost the parish about $200 to
pay for the education of one child. The Sisters need financial support for
school supplies. They need blankets and pillows and other supplies similar to
what is sent to the military serving overseas. It was asked if funds could be
sent to hire people who live there to help remove rubble. The council decided
the first step would be to form a committee to meet with Mary who is working
with the Sisters. The committee would coordinate what we should do first.
Deacon Mike will write up a note for the bulletin to ask for parishioners who
would be interested in serving on the Haitian Committee.
· Father Millott spoke about the Ecumenical Program to share an
understanding of Lenten practices from the past and present of other faiths.
About 25 people attended last night’s program at the Congregational Church.
Christ the King will host next week. Rob will cook and tables will be set up in
the Johnson Room.
· Vincent said there was a presentation about the Partners in Charity at
Cyprian Keys. There was a DVD presentation and a speaker talked about the
program. About 200 people attended. The DVD is available to all parishes. We
may show it in the vestibule before and after masses. Anita will link the DVD to
the website.
· Father asked about Holy Week activities at Christ the King. He was told
that the Burkes call people to take part in the Washing of the Feet on Holy
Thursday. Father will contact the Burkes.
· Anita will step down from the Council chairman position. We will all bring
three names of people we think might be interested in serving on the council
to the next meeting. Someone will need to take Anita’s position for the interim.
We need to find the council bylaws.
· Past council members’ names are in the bulletin-they will be removed.
Also in the bulletin it says the members of the committee are elected. In the
past, members were elected, but most of the current members volunteered, so
the bulletin will be corrected to reflect the change.
Administration
RICA
· There was an open forum last Wednesday, but bad weather limited
participation. There will be another forum on March 24th.
Organizations
Knight of Columbus
· The wheelchair is back in Boston, so Dave was unable to bring it to the
meeting. He passed around a flyer showing the less expensive wheelchair.
The Knights are interested in providing funds for the more expensive
wheelchairs that cost $150 rather then the $60 chairs. The military does
distribute the $60 chairs in Iraq and Afghanistan.
· The parish bought some tickets to the Men’s Conference to distribute to
interested parishioners.
Women’s Guild
· Evening of Recollection will be held on March 10th. Mass celebrated by
Father Riley is at 6 followed by a light dinner. Deacon Mike will give a talk
about Mary’s journey with Christ.
Cub Scouts
· The Pancake Breakfast went very well, raising about $700.
CYC
· The play will be on April 15-17. There is a cast of about 32 young people.
Ads will be sold after masses this weekend, and money has to be in two weeks
before the show.
Social Committee
· Parish Appreciation Banquet will be held on Saturday April 24th. 200-250
post cards will be sent to parish volunteers to encourage a larger turnout than
in the past. Janet will be discussing the menu with Rob. They will probably
have a buffet style dinner after cheese and crackers. In the past there has been
a DJ which is very expensive. Will probably have background music and the
parishioners can sit and socialize.
Ministry Reports
Ministry to the Elderly
· All homebound are being visited. The ministry is growing through word
of mouth.
Mustard Seed
· The Women’s’ Guild will be serving in March
Post Bereavement Committee
· The talk went well. There will be another speaker in May.
Interfaith Hospitality Committee
The next meeting is April 6th at 7:30 pm.
Father Millott ended the meeting with a prayer.
New members are welcome and encouraged to attend the next parish council
meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Johnson
