Minutes Parish Council Meeting April 6, 2010
Present: Father Millott, Deacon Mike Chase, Deacon Joe Ban, Dave
Standring, Karen Belliveau, Diane Long, and Kathy Johnson
Father Millott led the opening prayer with the parish council
members joining him in the recitation of a psalm followed by the
Mission Statement.
Father Millott
· Father will discuss the capital campaign with the Finance
Committee. It was suggested that we earmark the additional money
received to start a capital improvement fund.
· Partners in Charity Father Millott and father Riley will speak
after a short homily on the importance of the Partners in Charity
Campaign. Material will be in the pews.
Old Business
· Members of the parish council submitted the following names
of parishioners who may be interested in joining the Parish Council:
Arthur Coske, Allen Stansky, Rose Mary Spellane, John Moynihan,
Paul and Pat Coyne, Joe Script, Bill Trainor, Paul Matthews, Celeste
Mansfield, Sharon Mansfield, Roger Brunelle, Sam Bowden and Mary
Carrington. New members would be appointed to start in the fall.
Father Millott, Deacon Joe, and Deacon Mike left the meeting at this
time so members could discuss who would take Anita’s place as
chairman of the Committee. Vinny agreed to take on the leadership
role until the fall.
· There was a meeting last week to discuss our involvement with
the Haitian community. Many people attended to inquire about how
we can help the Sisters of St. Anne who have lost two members, five
schools, convents, and a medical center. The Sisters are currently
teaching in the streets and living in tents. Sister Inez spent three and
a half years in Haiti and is currently studying here. The committee
discussed taking a collection, but with all the collections currently
made in the parish they felt it would be better to ask for canes,
crutches and wheelchairs. However, the Sisters have said money
would be the best way to approach helping. The committee then
decided to organize a yard sale for June 19th. Items left over after
the sale will be picked up and removed from the parish facilities. A
storage area will be needed from June 1st tot June 20th to hold the
items for the sale as they are donated. The week before, one of the
Sisters will speak at all the Masses to talk about their roles in Haiti.
For long-term planning, a discussion took place about the feasibility
of our parish taking a sister parish in Haiti. We could bring their
needs into our prayers as well as set up a correspondence to share
experiences and send encouragement. Thirteen parishes in the
diocese are already participating in this type of program. It was
suggested by a parish council member that we look into supporting
a project such as a school for the sisters with money for books. It is
difficult to get supplies to Haiti without a direct connection, and the
Sisters would provide this connection. People would feel a more
tangible connection with this type of support. Father Millott’s earlier
parish sent money on a monthly basis from parish funds. It was
incredible what the people in Haiti could do with $400-600 per month.
The Haiti Committee will be meeting again next week.
· The magnets are very nice. A distribution plan has not yet been
devised. They will possibly be handed to families as they come into
Mass.
· We will start planning for our 75th jubilee during the September
meeting. We will set the direction of the celebration, possible with a
Mass followed by a social. A post-Mass gathering rather than a
banquet was suggested. We will look into how the church has
changed in the past 75 years and where we will go from here. We
might have a speaker one evening, such as leading experts on the
United States Catholic Church Owen Murphy or David O’Brien.
Temporal Administrator
· Inspectors are going through churches before occupancy of
Interfaith Hospitality residents arrive.
· With the heavy rains, there were three leaks in the Johnson
Room, and a possible leak near the light near the choir.
· The chimney has to be reappointed with the cutting of the roof
membrane
· The heat has not been on for over a week.
· Estimates for all projects are coming in.
· It will cost $95-99,000 to repave the parking lot.
· The asbestos and hot water pipe has been removed from the
religious ed. room, but the bill is not in yet.
· We are continuing to collect funds for the boiler replacement.
