MINUTES OF PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING
March 03, 2009
1. Meeting called to order by Anita Fenton
Father Foley opened the meeting with a prayer followed by the
committee reciting the Lord’s Prayer. Minutes were approved and the
Mission Statement was read by all.
Present: Father Foley, Deacon Joe, Anita Fenton, Vincent Matulaitis,
Janet Rauktis, Paul Franco, Mike Chase, Joan Cross, Diane Long, and
Kathy Johnson
2. Financial Report: Father Foley stated that we are financially sound
at this time, but there are items that need to be addressed by Deacon
Joe.
3. Temporal Administrator: Deacon Joe The sand and salt budget is
depleted. Someone will be looking at the fire alarm system tomorrow to
see what needs to be done to update it, because it is not currently
audible in all areas. Someone else is coming to check the speakers and
to transfer the system into a locked box. Too many people have access
to the sound system settings, and the speakers are not working
properly. One classroom panel needs to be fixed. The thermostats need
to be regulated. One boiler didn’t pass inspection. It either needs to be
repaired, or both boilers could be replaced with a modern system that
would prove to be more cost effective. The cost has been estimated at
$30-40,000 by Joe Bafaro, plus the cost of asbestos removal. We will
need to do a fundraiser to raise the money to pay for this as well as the
cost of re-covering the kneelers. It may be possible to cover the
kneelers by ourselves with help from the CYC and Boy Scouts. The
fundraiser will take place after the Bishop’s Fund. The lights in the
crown will be replaced soon using staging from John Lauring. Everyone
has been more cooperative in putting things back where they belong
when they are finished with them.
4. Old Business: The Grocery cards continue to be sold after all
masses. We have a core group of people that buy every week, but it
would be great if more families could join in the fight against
homelessness. Thanks to the many parishioners who donated art
supplies and easels for the homeless portrait project. There will be an
exhibit of the self-portraits of homeless teens and children at Showcase
Cinema North on April 2nd. The movie “Where God Left His Shoes” will
be shown. Tickets can be ordered at the table in the foyer where grocery
cards are sold. Tickets are $10.
5. New Business: Father recently received a letter from the bishop
confirming that St. Charles will be closing in 2010. Parishioners can go to
any other parish, and we are expecting some to choose Christ the King;
some have already registered. It is unknown who will receive the
finances from St. Charles, but Father has stated we won’t take any. It will
be up to St. Charles parishioners to decide which parish(es) will receive
their finances. We need to start planning how we will welcome St.
Charles parishioners and help them assimilate into our parish. Ideas
considered were: Ministry Fair and invite St. Charles parishioners, a
Ministry Packet currently being developed by the Knights sent to St.
Charles to describe ministries and give the opportunity to express
desire to continue in ministries involved with at St. Charles, and a
Welcoming Weekend to welcome all new parishioners, possibly in
September
Paul The mass for athletes will take place on May 16th at 6 pm. Paul is
currently working on making a “scorecard” listing mass at area
churches. He will look into advertising the mass in the Catholic Free
Press and area churches’ bulletins.
Ministry Reports
6. Social Committee Janet The Social Committee bought four long
white tables. We will be hosting the Interfaith Hospitality group starting
On May 4th for two or three weeks. Sign-up will begin soon.
Appreciation Day will be May 2nd. It would be nice if more people
participated. Father suggested he and other parish staff serve the
volunteers. He will talk to others about his idea.
7. CCD No report.
8. CYC Diane Show rehearsals have begun. They will be presenting
“Cinderella” on April 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Having a matinee was
discussed but there was a concern about light coming through the
windows and interfering with the stage lighting. Father made a
suggestion about how to cover the windows. Deacon Joe will talk to
John Lauring about building a platform for the kids to stand on rather
than standing on a table when operating the lights. The Souper Bowl
raised $630 which was distributed to area organizations. Twenty-nine
kids signed up to volunteer at Camp Sunshine. At the last mass/meeting,
there were a number of new faces.
9. Women’s Guild Joan Evening of Recollection will be on March
11th. Father Reilly is the speaker. There will be a mass and a very light
dinner.
10. Post Bereavement Committee No report
11 Knight of Columbus Deacon Joe There will be a raffle of many
prizes in May. Some of the prizes are a round trip ticket to Logan, tickets
to “Annie”, wine, and many others. People who borrowed a pix from the
rectory should return it if they are not using it any more. All parish chairs
that were borrowed should be returned.
12. Mustard Seed Committee No report
13. Decorating Committee No report
14. Ministry of the Sick Mike Has received many positive comments
about the packets. There are more available at the rectory.
