BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY
The loss of a loved one is the most stressful
of life's events. Survivors experience extreme
emotional pain, emptiness, pain and sorrow.
Death creates a void that no one can replace.
Yet life continues in an arduous, mournful
struggle.
To assist the bereaved in addressing this
emotional struggle we are forming a
Bereavement Ministry in an attempt to reach
out and share their pain in some way.
Essentially, our Ministry will consist of
members who will take a couple of minutes
and call a bereaved family and hopefully
provide a few words of encouragement. This
would be followed up with periodic calls. In
addition, the Bereavement Ministry would
periodically visit the bereaved if they so
desired.
Volunteers are needed to fulfill this heart
warming mission and extend an arm of the
Lord, during times of emptiness.
Commitments are minimal, --commit to just a
few minutes per week for the telephone
ministry. Volunteers could extend their
commitment by volunteering a couple of
hours a month to participate in the home
visitation program.
The Bereavement Ministry provides an
excellent opportunity to "do something" for
Lent and to participate in the Lord's Sermon
on the Mount "Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted" (Matthew 5:4)
We will visit the family to bring the
sympathy of the parish, to offer help in
planning the funeral liturgy, to serve or
deliver coffee and lunch after the funeral, to
house sit, and within a year, to offer an
informal meeting with a skilled bereavement
counselor. We welcome new members to
help in any or all of these tasks.
